The 10 Best Hunting Headlamps of 2023 | Ultimate Headlamp Guide

Hunting headlamp

Being able to see in the dark as you hike to or from your tree stand is extremely important. That is why most hunters place significant value on quality hunting headlamps.

The best hunting headlamps usually have the following characteristics:

  • Waterproof
  • Lightweight
  • Adjustable head strap
  • Strong lumen count
  • Adjustable light settings
  • Red, Green, or Blue light modes

The best hunting headlamps also pierce the darkness along trails and can also drop the power output to conserve battery as needed. Of course, the main purpose of a headlamp is to give you hands-free light. If you have to process your game at dusk, having control of your light will be essential.

Hunting headlamps for the dark

Here’s Why Red, Green, Blue (& White) Lights are Important

Its never fun when you spook the game you are trying to hunt. As a result, this is why most headlamps offer different lighting options. Its important to know which ones to use out in the field to give yourself the advantage.

Here is some additional info on each color and how to best use them:

Red Light

Red light is very useful when blood tracking your game or trying to be stealthy as you walk around in the dark. As a result of this, the red light preserves your natural night vision and is softer on the eyes. It is less startling than white light and can keep you easily hidden from your game. It is also a good idea to use this light in crowded areas around the campground or hunting shack so you do not disturb your fellow hunters.

Green Light

Many hunters have mixed feelings about this color’s ability to be used as a blood tracking light. Green light is most widely accepted as the best color for fishing. Why? Because green light attracts small phytoplankton which attracts bugs.  Because of this, it then attracts baitfish and eventually attracts the fish you’re after.

Blue Light

While blue light has been argued to be the best blood tracking color, it largely hinders a hunter’s natural night vision more than red or green. As a result of this, many hunters give mixed reviews about using it. It may not be as affective for everyone who tries it. If it is something your headlamp offers, try it out and see if it works better for you.

White Light

Every headlamp on the list above comes standard with a traditional white light beam. As a result, it is best to use this light when you need to find your way back, walk through the woods, or simply need hands free light as your disposal. As a word of caution, you are more likely to spook the animals using white light. So avoid using it in the field in the early morning hours as you prepare and set out to your hunting location.

Our Pro-Tip: If You Know You Need It, Then Pull The Trigger

It’s true that the cost of quality hunting headlamps may be slightly higher than a regular headlamp. Don’t settle for a headlamp just to save a few! Make the investment (depending on your hunting situation) and reap the benefits of how quality hunting headlamps are engineered. You will not be disappointed in the long run.

A slight price difference shouldn’t be a factor if you are truly looking for a quality hunting headlamp that will last. The best things in life always come at a cost. Don’t just save a few bucks on a cheaper headlamp if you truly need one of hunting quality. You will be glad you invested your money where it counts!
